چکیده

1 Chief, Bioengineering Laboratory, Veterans Administration Prosthetics Center, 252 Seventh Ave., New York 1, N. Y. M ANY factors affect the gait of an aboveknee, bilateral amputee as he walks on his prostheses. Among the factors are his general health and strength, the length and condition of his stumps, the alignment of his prostheses, his comfort, and the type of knee units employed. While some of these factors are difficult to observe accurately, others lend themselves to objective measurement and evaluation by means of current bioengineering techniques. Not long ago, the Bioengineering Laboratory of the Veterans Administration Prosthetics Center had occasion to evaluate the gait of an above-knee, bilateral amputee, and in the course of the evaluation developed records that show graphically the "before" and "after" effect of increased hip flexion of about 10 deg. in both sockets.

Differences in knee flexion between the Genium and C-Leg microprocessor knees while walking on level ground and ramps.

BACKGROUND Microprocessor knees have improved the gait and functional abilities of persons with transfemoral amputation. The Genium prosthetic knee offers an advanced sensor and control system designed to decrease impairment by: allowing greater stance phase flexion, easing transitions between gait phases, and compensating for changes in terrain. The aim of this study was to determine differenc...

Technical note--tilting stubbies.

Bilateral amputees who are fitted with standard full length prostheses find it difficult to walk fast or climb up and down stairs. Usually stubbies, or short prostheses with non-articulated rocker bottoms, are also provided, especially for geriatric amputees. An interchangeable system has been evolved which enables the same prosthesis to be used either as a full length prosthesis or as a stubby...

Management of an above-knee amputee with complex medical problems using the CAT-CAM prosthesis.

The purpose of this case report is to 1) briefly describe the traditional above-knee (AK) quadrilateral socket, 2) describe the contoured adducted trochanteric-controlled alignment method (CAT-CAM) socket, 3) describe the management of a patient with a temporary CAT-CAM prosthesis, and 4) explain how the CAT-CAM prosthesis approach has resolved a medically complex clinical problem. The 49-year-...

Dynamic analysis of above-knee amputee gait.

BACKGROUND It is important to understand the characteristics of amputee gait to develop more functional prostheses. The aim of this study is to quantitatively evaluate amputee gait by dynamic analysis of the musculoskeletal system during level walking and stair climbing. METHODS Dynamic analysis using gait analysis, electromyography and musculoskeletal modeling for above-knee amputees (n=8) a...
